How to play mahjong solitaire
A matching game for one player. The 144 tiles of a traditional mahjong set are stacked into a layout, and your goal is to clear them all, two at a time.
1. Find a matching pair
Click two identical tiles to remove them. Two three-dot tiles make a pair; a three-dot and a five-dot do not.
2. Only free tiles can move
A tile is free when nothing rests on top of it and its left or right side is open (top or bottom when the board turns sideways on a phone). Blocked tiles look slightly darker.
3. Clear the whole board
Remove every tile to win. Freeing tiles from the tallest stacks first keeps more moves open for later.
Good to know: the four Flower tiles all match one another, and so do the four Season tiles, even though their pictures differ.
Frequently asked questions
The name mahjong usually means the classic table game for four players, born in China in the 19th century, where everyone races to build a winning hand. Mahjong solitaire, also known as Shanghai or tile matching, borrows the same tiles for a calm puzzle you play on your own. Mahjong Daybreak is all about that solo game.
Is Mahjong Daybreak free?
Yes. Every game is free to play, and there is no account to create.
Do I need to download anything?
No. The game runs in your web browser, on a computer, a tablet or a phone.
Is mahjong solitaire the same game as mahjong?
Not quite. Classic mahjong is a game for four players who build winning hands. Mahjong solitaire uses the same tiles for a matching puzzle you play on your own.
Why can’t I pick a tile?
That tile is not free yet: another tile is resting on it, or tiles block both its sides. Clear the tiles around it first.
When does the daily puzzle change?
At midnight in your own time zone, so a new puzzle is waiting for you every morning.
Can I play today’s puzzle more than once?
Your first attempt is the one that counts for your time, your streak and the result you share. Once you have finished, you can replay it for practice, or keep playing unlimited untimed games in free play.
